Central: The Tigers and Guardians both made the playoffs last season but it will be the Tigers who win this division. Any time a team has the reigning CY Young award winner in Tarik Skubal who has won it back-back, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, and they brought back franchise legend Justin Verlander, have a good chance.
But they also went out and signed Framber Valdez away from the Astros where he was their ace and will be their #2 here in Detroit, plus kept Kyle Finnegan in the bullpen with Will Vest and brought in another future Hall of Famer in Kenley Jansen as well. Their lineup is still stacked with 1B Spencer Torkelson, INF Colt Keith, UTL Javy Baez, 2B Gleyber Torres, DH Kerry Carpenter and LF Riley Greene. Depth wise they still have 3B Jace Jung, SS Trey Sweeney, OFers Parker Meadows, Wenceel Perez, Matt Vierling and UTL Zach McKinstry, not to mention 2 Gold Glove caliber catchers in Dillon Dingler and Jake Rodgers.Cleveland got lucky Detroit blew the lead but they got better so it will be tougher for them since they still have holes on their team. Outside of LF Steven Kwan at the top and 3B Jose Ramirez with Kyle Manzardo/David Fry at 1B/DH their lineup isn’t good. Their middle infield is good on defense but cannot hit, two-thirds of their outfield is questionable and their catching duo is Bo Naylor who is supposed to hit and Austin Hedges who is good on defense but this combo hasn’t produced.
Their starting rotation is what their best at with Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams and Logan Allen at the top. Due to gambling/throwing games scandal they do not have a closer and lost one of their starting pitchers so their bullpen is lost. It doesn’t matter Stephen Vogt won Manager of the Year back-back years it is going to be even harder to make the playoffs. The Royals were supposed to be a playoff team competing for the championship due to their rotation and young players but injuries and underperforming led them to barely over 500. That should be the reason they compete since their rotation is still Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha, Kris Bubic and Noah Cameron. Their bullpen is still Carlos Estevez, Lucas Erceg, and they brought back Matt Strahm.
Their lineup is still led by C Salvador Perez, SS Bobby Witt Jr and 1B Vinnie Pasquantino, but still have an infield jam log of Maikel Garcia, Jonathan India and Michael Massey for the other two-thirds of the infield/DH. At least they fixed their outfield by adding Lane Thomas, Starling Marte, and Isaac Collins to Jac Caglianone and John Rave. The Twins are lucky they are in the same division as the White Sox or they would have been in last place since they had a fire sale at the deadline essentially trading everyone but CF Byron Buxton, INF Royce Lewis and SPs Pablo Lopez and Joe Ryan.
It is looking like that since they fired their manager, got a new one and have already lost Lopez for the season(his second season of being hurt) so look for them to unload Ryan, outfielders Matt Wallner, Trevor Larnach, C Ryan Jeffers, SP Bailey Ober and maybe some relievers. They did add 1B Josh Bell, C Victor Caratini, INFers Gio Urshela, Orlando Arcia and relievers Taylor Rogers, Andrew Chafin and Liam Hendriks. The White Sox still lost over 100 games but decided to go back to what made them successful which is pitching and defense. Their rotation is led by Shane Smith (All-Star), Sean Burke with Davis Martin who will have another full healthy season, Anthony Kay who is back stateside, and brought back Erick Fedde who was good last time he was there. Also, they are hopefully getting Drew Thorpe and Ky Bush back from injuries. They also decided to get veteran relievers instead of letting inexperienced guys go out there and blow leads; signing Seranthony Dominguez to close, Sean Newcomb, and trading for Jordan Hicks lets Grant Taylor/Jordan Leasure be put in less pressure situations.
Their lineup still has too many corner infield/outfield/DH types in Lenyn Sosa, Miguel Vargas, Curtis Mead, Andrew Benintendi and still want to DH one of their two young catchers Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero. Their biggest signing was Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami who will DH or play 1B adding to the log jam. They waited too long to trade CF Luis Robert so now they have a hole in CF as they plan to use infielders Brooks Baldwin or Luisangel Acuna. At least they signed Austin Hays to play RF and their middle infield is strong with Colson Montgomery and Chase Meidroth.East: The Blue Jays went from last place to winning the American League Pennant and they only got better. Their rotation is still top tier as they have Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and Jose Berrios, Max Scherzer, and signed Dylan Cease long term plus Cody Ponce who was overseas/a full season of Trey Yesavage.
Their bullpen surprised many last season but bullpens can be good one year or bad the next as Jeff Hoffman is shaky as closer but signing Tyler Rogers is good depth. The lineup is stacked with 1B Vlad Guerrero Jr, C Alejandro Kirk, outfielders Dalton Varsho, George Springer, Addison Barger, Davis Schneider, Anthony Santander and traded for Jesus Sanchez. The rest of the infield will be a full season of Andres Gimenez at SS since Bo Bichette left, post-season hero Ernie Clement at 2B, and Japanese import Kazuma Okamoto at 3B.
The Yankees will try again to live up to their payroll with a stacked lineup of outfielders
Aaron Judge, bringing back Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham, DH Giancarlo Stanton, infielders Jazz Chizholm Jr, Ryan McMahon, Ben Rice and re-signed Paul Goldschmidt, plus C Austin Wells.
The Red Sox decided to double down on being a playoff team by upgrading their rotation instead of waiting for all the injured pitchers to come back; they signed Ranger Suarez, traded for Sonny Gray/Johan Oviedo to help out All-Star ace Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello. They extended closer Aroldis Chapman and still have Garrett Whitlock but could improve their bullpen.
They lost Alex Bregman in free agency but hope youngsters INF Marcelo Mayer and OF Roman Anthony can make up for technically losing two big bats all in one season(Rafael Devers). Anthony is a part of a stacked outfield of Jarren Duran, Gold Glovers Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu plus Masataka Yoshida. To avoid having a black hole at 1B with Triston Casas always getting hurt they traded for Willson Contreras to help SS Trevor Story in the lineup. They also added Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Caleb Durbin to their infield mix.Well the Orioles fell to last place leading to their manager being fired and them retooling this team. They signed 1B Pete Alonso, traded for OF Taylor Ward and gave a massive long-term extension to their prospect C Samuel Basallo; traded for Shane Baz, signed Chris Bassitt, Ryan Helsley and re-signed Zach Eflin.
Their rotation which was an issue last season so this season it will be better by getting back Kyle Bradish and Tyler Wells back from injury with their three offseason moves and still have Dean Kremer and Trevor Rogers. Helsley will replace Felix Bautista who is out for another season but they still have Andrew Kittredge and Yennier Cano. The remaining position players are outfielders Colton Cowser, Tyler O’Neill and Heston Kjerstad, and infielders Ryan Mountcastle, Coby Mayo, Jordan Westburg, Jackson Holliday and Gunnar Henderson plus C Adley Rutschman who might get traded. The Rays may finally bottom out as they also trade off valuable assets and don’t do much to fix their talent at the MLB level. They traded away Brandon Lowe, Josh Lowe, Shane Baz and let Peter Fairbanks, Adrian Houser, Christopher Morel leave in free agency.
Their pitching will still be their strength with Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan, Ryan Pepiot but signed question marks in Stephen Matz and Nick Martinez, plus the bullpen is a question mark. Outside of 1B Yandy Diaz, 2B Jonathan Aranda and 3B Junior Caminero their lineup still has holes at SS, C and two thirds of the outfield; maybe CF Cedric Mullins who they signed might be a tradable asset at the deadline.West: The Mariners almost made the World Series and this year will be no different thanks to their rotation of Logan Gilbert, Bryan Woo, George Kirby, Luis Castillo and Bryce Miller plus closer Andres Munoz. Their lineup still boasts C Cal Raleigh who should have won MVP, 1B Josh Naylor, outfielders Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena, and they traded for Brendan Donovan.
The thing that held them back was they couldn’t score enough since RF and DH were black holes for them and now one infield spot will be open since Jorge Polanco and Eugenio Surarez both left in free agency. The Astros surprisingly missed the playoffs but they were one of the most injured teams in all of baseball. They did lose both Framber Valdez and Luis Garcia to free agency so it will be on Hunter Brown, Christian Javier and Lance McCullers Jr. to shoulder the load but also new pitcher Tatsuya Imai. Their bullpen is still great with Josh Hader and Bryan Abreu.
Their offense will have to carry them but will need INF Isaac Paredes, DH Yordan Alvarez, 2B Jose Altuve, SS Jeremy Pena, 1B Christian Walker, INF Carlos Correa and C Yainer Diaz to stay healthy and produce. The issue is their alignment since the Altuve in LF experiment did not work so that puts Correa or Paredes into the DH spot but you’ve got Alvarez who is supposed to DH; since their outfield is a question mark for production Alvarez might play LF if he can stay healthy. The Rangers can have a top tier rotation if it stays healthy with Jacob DeGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker plus they trade for MacKenzie Gore. Their bullpen doesn’t have a reliever with much closer experience except Alexis Diaz who hasn’t been good in years.
Their lineup also can be stacked if it stays healthy/produces like it’s supposed to with SS Corey Seager and OF Wyatt Langford. 2B Marcus Semien, RF Adolis Garcia and C Jonah Heim are gone so in their places are OF Brandon Nimmo and C Danny Jansen. The rest of the lineup is 1B Jake Burger, OFers Joc Pederson, Evan Carter, 3B Josh Jung and UTL Josh Smith. The last issue is the outfield alignment of where Carter, Lanford and Nimmo lineup since none are able to play RF.The A’s keep improving little by little each season by not unloading their best players but instead are locking them up long-term. The core of their lineup is DH Brent Rooker, OF Lawrence Butler, SS Jacob Wilson, 1B Nick Kurtz, 1B/DH/LF Tyler Soderstrom and C Shea Langeliers.
They traded for UTL Jeff McNeil who can play anywhere like 3B but will have him start at 2B and push Zach Gelof to a utility role. Their rotation isn’t bad since it still has Luis Severino and Jeffrey Springs plus they added Aaron Civale. Their bullpen doesn’t have a closer since they traded Mason Miller but added veterans Mark Leiter Jr and Scott Barlow.Well the Angels go as OF Mike Trout does and he has not been healthy in a few seasons and now he is moving back to CF where the durability question will come up again.
They also started over at manager with former All-Star catcher Kurt Suzuki and added to their rotation with Grayson Rodriguez and Alek Manoah. The rest of the rotation is serviceable in Yusei Kikuchi and Reid Detmers plus they added Jordan Romano, Kirby Yates, Drew Pomeranz and Brent Suter to their bullpen. Taylor Ward was traded away for Josh Lowe to play the outfield with Trout, Jorge Soler and Jo Adell. Their infield is still 1B Nolan Schanuel, C Logan O’Hoppe, SS Zach Neto and 3B Yoan Moncada, but lost 2B Luis Renifgo in free agency so 2B is a question.Central: The Brewers keep winning their division no matter who the manager is (Craig Counsell or Pat Murphy-back-back manager of the year) or who is on the pitching staff as they have become a pitching reclamation factory. They still have Brandon Woodruff and Jacob Misiorowksi at the top plus the two pitchers they turned around in Quinn Priester and Chad Patrick plus this year’s new project Kyle Harrison. Their bullpen still has Trevor Megill closing and Abner Uribe at the back end.
They still have a strong outfield of Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick but traded away two rookies from last year’s team in Isaac Collins and Caleb Durbin. Their middle infield is one of the best defensive ones in all of baseball with Joey Ortiz and Brice Turang and has one of the best catchers in William Contreras. They have questions in CF with Garrett Mitchell/Blake Perkins (health or performance), 1B if Andrew Vaughn can replicate his 2nd half stats and 3B with Durbin gone they will turn to Luis Rengifo or David Hamilton. The Cubs made the playoffs for the first time since 2020 due to their lineup of OFers Peter Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, C Carson Kelly, 1B Michael Busch, SS Dansby Swanson and 2B Nico Hoerner plus Kyle Tucker who left in free agency.
They added 3B Alex Bregman to replace Tucker in the lineup and traded for Edward Cabrera to add to their rotation. That rotation will be led by Rookie of the Year runner up Cade Horton, with Matthew Boyd, Colin Rea, Jameson Taillon, Shota Imanaga and eventually Justin Steele coming back from surgery. Their bullpen still doesn’t have a lockdown closer with youngster Danny Palencia who throws heat but at least they signed some veterans to support the load in Phil Maton, Hunter Harvey, Hoby Milner, and Shelby Millerand re-signed Caleb Thielbar. The Reds surprised many by making the wildcard round their first playoff appearance in five seasons and a good amount of the credit should go to manager Terry Francona and their pitching staff. That staff is led by Hunter Greene, with Andrew Abbott, Brady Singer and Nick Lodolo while the fifth spot is wide open with some young options. Emilio Pagan is is still their closer and has Tony Santillan and Pierce Johnson as set up men.
Their offense has the same issue it had last season; too many infielders to put at DH or the corner spots so they will have infielders in the outfield again. Infielders Spencer Steer and Sal Stewart cannot play 3B since they traded for Ke’Bryan Hayes(a platinum glove winner) so one has to be at 1B or DH; that also prompted them to move Noelvi Marte to RF and signed Eugenio Suarez too creating more logjams. Their up the middle alignment is good with SS Elly De La Cruz, 2B Matt McLain, C Tyler Stephenson and CF TJ Friedl. They had holes offensively in both corner outfield spots which is why Steer and Marte will see time in the outfield sacrificing defense for more offense. The Cardinals have fallen on hard times as they haven’t made the playoffs in three seasons and maybe can finish in last due all the talent they have unloaded since the deadline last year. Their rotation lost a few veterans like Sonny Gray and Miles Mikolas so Dustin May if he is healthy will be their co-ace with Matthew Liberatore since the rest are all inexperienced starters; their bullpen doesn’t have a closer since they traded away Ryan Helsley. They also traded away Willson Contreras, Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado which opens more playing time for Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson at the corners and Thomas Saggese at 2B.
The outfield is the same with Lars Nootbaar, Jordan Walker and Victor Scott II plus they still have SS Masyn Winn. The catching situation is a three headed monster of Ivan Herrera, Pedro Pages and Yohel Pozo, as one will DH when not catching. The Pirates will again be a last place team or they could pass the Cardinals for 4th place. They traded away talent at every deadline as they did last year getting rid of their closer and their starting 3B. The outfield alignment is still an issue as it was last season as Oneil Cruz is not a CF nor is Bryan Reynolds a RF; but they doubled down and signed two DHs in Ryan O’Hearn and Marcell Ozuna as one of them is going to play the outfield. Their infield is more or less set with Nick Gonzales back at SS for a full season, Jared Triolo is a good defender at 3B and they still have Spencer Horowitz at 1B; the other new addition was trading for 2B Brandon Lowe.
Lastly their starting rotation is led by reigning CY Young winner in Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller; the rest will be filled in by some young pitchers and Jose Urquidy who they signed but they also will get Jared Jones back from surgery. They have no closer since they traded him away at the last deadline so veteran relievers will probably be traded.East: The Phillies are always a contender the only issue is they cannot get past the Dodgers in the playoffs. Their rotation does have some question marks like the health of Zack Wheeler due the blood clots and they lost Ranger Suarez in free agency; so Christopher Sanchez is the ace with Jesus Luzardo and Aaron Nola, plus Taijuan Walker which is still solid but not great. A full season of Jhoan Duran as closer with Jose Alvarado, Tanner Banks and they signed Brad Keller makes a solid bullpen.
Their lineup is still deep with them as they did bring back DH Kyle Schwarber, C JT Realmuto to help protect 1B Bryce Harper and 3B Alec Bohm. Harrison Bader and Nick Castellanos are gone, but Adolis Garcia was signed and top prospect in Justin Crawford are the replacements to pair with the other role players like 2B Bryson Stott, SS Trea Turner and LF Brandon Marsh. The Mets have the money and the talent but they failed to make the playoffs last season and even though they made many moves this summer most were head scratching. 1. They let both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz both leave in free agency. 2. They traded away LF Brandon Nimmo/2B Jeff McNeil. 3. They signed INF Jorge Polanco, INF Bo Bichette, and acquired Marcus Semien; causing them to have a 2B/infield log jam. 4. Traded for CF Luis Robert and SP Freddy Peralta; signed Devin Williams and Luke Weaver from the Yankees to close games. A rotation of Peralta, Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, David Peterson with either Kodai Senga and youngsters Nolan McLean and Jonah Tong is better than last year.
SS Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto who is now in LF will anchor this lineup but the question is-the infielders in the lineup since two are playing new positions. The reason why the Braves have not seen the playoffs the last few seasons is their best players cannot stay healthy; OFRonald Acuna Jr, 2B Ozzie Albies, 3B Austin Riley, SS Ha-Seong Kim and C Sean Murphy, and on the pitching side it’s been Spencer Strider and Reynaldo Lopez.
They still have 1B Matt Olson, CF Michael Harris II and the reigning NL Rookie of the Year C Drake Baldwin plus their two offseason additions in OF Mike Yastrzemski and C Jonah Heim. Chris Sale still leads this rotation of question marks because of health again like Grant Holmes, Hurston Waldrep and Spencer Schwellenbach; but they re-signed Raisel Iglesias and added Robert Suarez to make a two-headed monster at closer. That even caused Brian Snitker to retire and replaced him with Walt Weiss. The Marlins still do the same things like trading away players at the deadline or offseason to acquire prospects like unloading both Ryan Weathers and Edward Cabrera. Their rotation still has Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Max Meyer and Braxton Garrett but they need to all stay healthy; while their bullpen got better by signing Pete Fairbanks to pair with Anthony Bender and Calvin Faucher.
Their lineup has OF Kyle Stowers, C Agustin Ramirez, INFers Connor Norby, Xavier Edwards and Otto Lopez, plus young outfielders Jakob Marsee, Griffin Conine and got Owen Caissie from the Cubs and signed Christopher Morel. The Nationals started over with a new GM and a new manager who is the youngest ever in Blake Butera. Their teams go if their three best players are healthy in SS CJ Abrams, OFers James Wood and Dylan Crews but Abrams could be traded.
They traded for C Harry Ford who is considered one of the best prospects which pushes Keibert Ruiz to the bench, they still have a hole at 1B and CF offensively and are hoping 3B Brady House fills the 3B hole and 2B Luis Garcia isn’t consistent. Pitching wise they traded their best starter in McKenzie Gore, while both Cade Cavalli and Josiah Gray have health concerns but signed Miles Mikolas to eat innings but have no closer.West: It is inevitable due to the money, their front office and current leadership that the Dodgers will go back to the World Series and win it all again even if it takes 7 epic games to win it. Any weakness the team has can be solved via a trade at the deadline as well due to their money and farm system. Looking at their rotation without the injury concerns it has Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki and four young pitchers; it doesn’t even get to the DH Shohei Ohtani who went back to pitching last season as the season progressed. Their bullpen added Edwin Diaz to what had a nice core of Blake Treinen, Will Klein, and Alex Vesia and will get Tanner Scott/Evan Phillips back from injury.
Their lineup is still the most stacked due to Ohtani and Mookie Betts even if they should be in the middle and not at the top making bottom 3 not as scary; Betts eased in nicely to being a full time shortstop but affected his offense. After those two they still have 1B Freddie Freeman, 3B Max Muncy, C Will Smith, OF Teoscar Hernandez, UTL players Miguel Rojas, Tommy Edman, Kike Hernandez, Hyeseong Kim and CF Andy Pages. The biggest move they made on offense was adding Kyle Tucker to a long term deal which also improves the defense moving T Hernandez to LF.The Padres have started over at manager by firing Mike Shildt and replacing him with former reliever Craig Stammen to take over a team that didn’t change that much from last season. Their rotation is still led by Michael King and Nick Pivetta, the only difference is instead of Yu Darvish it will be Joe Musgrove who is back from injury while Darvish is out; they added German Marquez, Griffin Canning, Walker Buehler, Marco Gonzales and Tristion McKenize to patch the back end with their own young guys. They did lose closer Robert Suarez but had Mason Miller on the roster to step in and the other four relievers are no slouches either in Jason Adam, Adrian Morejon, Jeremiah Estrada and Wandy Peralta.
The lineup goes as 3B Manny Machado and RF Fernando Tatis Jr goes when healthy; they also still have CF Jackson Merrill, SS Xander Bogaerts and 2B Jake Cronenworth. The question marks will be DH/1B/LF between Ramon Laureano, Nicky Castellanos, Miguel Andujar, Ty France and Gavin Sheets. The Giants hired a college manager Tony Vitello to replace Bob Melvin to oversee a team that is mostly the same with a few additions but to see if they can be better than .500. The lineup is what will carry them as they will have DH Rafael Devers for a full season with SS Willy Adames, 3B Matt Chapman, OFers Heliot Ramos and Jung Hoo Lee and C Patrick Bailey.
The newest additions are CF Harrison Bader which pushes Lee to RF and 2B-former batting champ Luis Arraez at 2B. Their rotation is led by Logan Webb and Robbie Ray but the back end will be new additions of Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle; the middle spot is wide open between young pitchers Carson Wisenhunt, Landen Roupp or Hayden Birdsong to name some. The bullpen might be an issue with their All-Star closer Randy Rodriguez being out for a while with his injury even if Ryan Walker was serviceable. The Diamondbacks did a bit of a fire sale at the trade deadline and got Merrill Kelly back in the offseason to be their ace; even Zac Gallen came back for another season to help co-lead the rotation. The rotation still has Ryne Nelson, Brandon Pfaadt and Eduardo Rodriguez plus at some point Corbin Burnes will make a return from surgery and even signed Michael Soroka as well. Their bullpen will be a weakness until the second half as their three best relievers AJ Puk, Justin Martinez and Andrew Saalfrank are all injured to start the season.
Their two best outfielders Lourdes Gurriel Jr and Corbin Carroll have two different kinds of injuries holding them out to start the season which will lead them to use infielders in the outfield flanking Alek Thomas. The infield is still good with SS Geraldo Perdomo, 2B Ketel Marte, C Gabriel Moreno and traded for 3B Nolan Arenado; DH/1B will be a combination of Carlos Santana and 1B Pavin Smith.
The Rockies almost broke the record for most losses in a season missing it by two so they hired a new front office but kept their interim manager Warren Schaffer to be their full time manager. Give them credit for trying to put some band-aids on the rotation with tradable guys for the trade deadline: Jose Quintana, Tomoyuki Sugano and Michael Lorenzen who can eat innings alongside the ace Kyle Freeland and Antonio Senzatela. Their bullpen is still a mess so expect another bad season due to that.
The best thing about the team is C Hunter Goodman who is an All-Star and Silver Slugger leading this lineup. The question is who will help support him? Will OFers Jordan Beck, Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak help; they did add OFers Jake McCarthy and Troy Johnston while the infield is still led by SS Ezequiel Tovar but who else lines up around him like maybe Willi Castro or Edouard Julien or their own young guys?
