Best Sports Venues/Road Trips: My Summmer visiting the 3 sports hall of fames in America

I’m one of the biggest sports fans out there and my favorite three sports are baseball, basketball and football. When I was told that in the summer of ‘07 I was going to all three of them (since hockey is in Canada) I was so excited since the Baseball Hall of Fame is something I’ve dreamed about going to since I first fell in love with the sport of baseball. I love the other sports but Cooperstown, New York is always romanticized about when you talk about all the legends that came before you in baseball history. The whole town is the museum, baseball fields, and stores.

I was very lucky that I got to go the year that Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. got in since there were featured exhibits for them. Both of them played during my childhood in the 90s-early 2000s and when Gwynn died it was heartbreaking. I played Backyard Baseball 2001 with them both in there and had their cards from the game.  They also had a collage of all their baseball cards and I had a few of them. The best part for me was that my grandparents (my mom parents) met us there since they live in the NY metropolitan area. My grandfather and I always talk about sports but really baseball every week and he would tell me stories about the great Yankees, Mets and other NY athletes. So it was special to share that experience with him.

What should really be America’s pastime is baseball and you really can believe that when you walk throughout the Baseball Hall of Fame. It has three floors where you can see all of the history of the game from era to era, player to player and team to team. One of the coolest things was the glass case of all the no-hitters balls.  The first floor has all the Hall of Fame plaques, baseball movies exhibit, broadcasters/journalist exhibit, and a learning center and kids area to play.

The 2nd floor is where you start the baseball history from Abner Doubleday, Babe Ruth, women in baseball, an African America baseball exhibit, baseball scouts exhibit and a section of recent baseball history of all 30 teams. The 3rd floor has a ballparks exhibit, record section, postseason section and new exhibits every year. They suggest you start on 2nd floor, then go to the 3rd and finish on the first floor and buy from their gift shop. I’m probably the only person to buy baseball cards of recent players. I wasn’t done reading everything in each exhibit, my parents had to keep asking me to leave and hurry up but I wanted to read everything and look at all the plaques. I took photos with those cheap plastic cameras but never got them developed.

The Baseball Hall of Fame is the best museum of all the sports because it’s an actual museum of baseball history.  After we went to the Baseball Hall of Fame my grandparents joined us as we drove to the basketball hall of fame in Springfield, MA which is called Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. I hate to say this but what my dad and grandfather had told me about it made it sound almost as cool as the baseball one but guess what? It was not.

You pull up expecting it to be away from the city of Springfield Massachusetts like it is in Cooperstown NY, but its inside a mall complex, with a salon and pizza place next to it. When you finally walk in it’s a huge basketball court and you wonder where the actual museum is.  You see tons of camps having their kids playing basketball and that you find out that around the huge court in some of the rooms are the exhibits. For someone who knows lots about baseball but less about basketball I wanted the same experience of being able to look at a huge museum and learn more about the sport.

With little exhibits, many stores, huge basketball court and the fact that it is not just the NBA but also for college, Olympics, foreign basketball, women basketball, and ABA. It is so unorganized as you’re walking around the big basketball court in these small rooms where there is no rhyme or reason why one thing is in one room or wall.  One second it’s talking about the NBA then it’s now about college basketball which was confusing and not entertaining. You can include college, Olympics, foreign basketball, women basketball and the ABA if you have an actual Hall of Fame/museum that has mostly NBA in it not what it is now.  I don’t want a mall and a basketball court that has some exhibits.

If you read Bill Simmons’ “The Book of the Basketball” he has a whole chapter dedicated to how to redo the whole entire Basketball Hall of Fame. He brings up the point that the NBA doesn’t have one spot in the building showing its history and stats like in baseball (Cooperstown) or football (Canton) that in his opinion it should be in the small town where Larry Bird is from to make a point that Springfield doesn’t have any real historical point.  Besides where it is located he has a whole full proof system of floors of the Hall of Fame to have with the ABA and other basketball sections (college, Olympics, foreign, women’s) on different floors but most of the floors be about the NBA , teams, players (plaques), coaches/executives/owners, broadcasters/journalists, records, and all star weekend.

After we bought our souvenirs of course we went to our hotel to enjoy the area like we did in Cooperstown. My grandparents left for NY metropolitan area and we were headed for Canton and Columbus since they are close to each other and my mom’s friend lives in Columbus.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton is the 2nd best sports Hall of Fame. It has the perfect combo of being a museum that shows the history of the NFL and a basement for the kids to play around and interact. It has a room of all the busts of all the Hall of Famers and so many exhibits about the history of football. The year I went it had a case with the jerseys of Devin Hester and  Nathan Vasher of the Chicago Bears for the longest kick return touchdowns. I learned so much about the history of football because no one really knows about the offensive linemen, punters, kickers and not all of the defensive players. It had so many signed footballs and other gear of Hall of Fame players or all time moments. It also has a section about all the Super Bowls with all of the Super Bowl rings from each year. In the kids area you can throw the football round and play Madden. It is the 2nd best Hall of Fame because it has the perfect combination of a museum and kids area, unlike the basketball one where it is mostly an all-kids area.

That summer is one of the best summers of my life being a huge sports fan. I had gone to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Canada but I was too young to remember it.

So to rank in order the best sports Hall of Fames: 1. Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown 2. Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton  3. Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto   4. Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Ultimate Staring 5 for the Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls have been around since 1966 and are one of the most successful franchises as they have won six championships. The Bulls have 10 players in the Hall of Fame that played for them and many all-stars. The Bulls are the third NBA franchise in Chicago, after the PackersZephyrs (now the Washington Wizards) and the Stags.  The Bulls were founded by Dick Klein, who was the Bulls' only owner to ever play professional basketball(Chicago American Gears). They posted the best record by an expansion team in NBA history(33-48) being coached by Chicagoan and former NBA star Johnny Red Kerr.

Every Bulls discussion and really all NBA discussions start with "His Airiness", Michael Jordan at Shooting Guard. Jordan won all of the Bulls six championships taking home all 6 NBA Finals MVP trophies.

  • 1x National College player of the year

  • All-Time scoring leader for The Bulls

At the other Guard position it is very hard to pick since the Bulls had a Hall of Famer play for them in their 1st year of existence,  Guy Rodgers. Rodgers in that one season led the league in assists with 908, a Bulls single season record and was voted into the Hall of Fame last year. The nod goes to the the heart and soul of the Bulls his whole life either as a player or broadcaster, Norm Van Lier. His number is retired by the Bulls(#20). Despite being only 6'1, his emphasis on defense kept him under the radar of stardom, and he was not recruited by major basketball powers. The Bulls did draft him in 1969 draft in the 3rd round but traded him to the Kansas City Royals. After leading the league in assists the Bulls reacquired him where he would spend 10 years with them.Van Lier held the record for the longest field goal in NBA history (84 feet) for 24 years. Was the Bulls color commentator for two years and 1992 to 2009, he was a television pre-game and post-game analyst for Chicago Bulls games. He frequently appeared on other Chicago television programs to discuss the Bulls.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Van_Lier

At Small Forward the Bulls have two Hall of Famers, Chet Walker and Scottie Pippen. Walker won his ring with the Philadelphia 76ers, was a seven time all star, and an NBA All Rookie 1st team. We all know how good Jordan was but Pippen was no slouch. They were like Batman & Robin one of the greatest tag teams ever since they both were crucial towards those six championships. The first year Jordan was retired Pippen led the Bulls in scoring, assists, and blocks, and was second in the NBA in steals per game, averaging 22.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 2.9 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game, while shooting 49.1% from the field and a career-best 32% from the 3-point line, 55 wins and took the Bulls to the Eastern Conference Finals.

  • Leads the NBA in career playoff steals, with 395
  • Jersey retired 2x by Bulls and Central Arkansas

At Power Forward for the Bulls is Bob Love who is a Hall of Famer and has his number retired(#4). Yes Nate Thurmond played for the Bulls but that was for only a year plus, the only thing he did for the Bulls was be the first player in NBA history to officially record a quadruple-double. Love was a two time All American and was drafted by the Royals in the fourth in 1965 but failed to make the team, and instead spent the year playing in the Eastern Basketball League. After averaging over 25 points per game, Love earned the EBL Rookie of the Year Award and gained enough confidence to try out for the Royals once more, where he made the team as a reserve. The Bucks took him in the expansion draft and then traded him to the Bulls. Love now works as the Bulls' Director of Community Affairs.
  • 3x All Star
  • 2x All NBA 2nd Team
  • 3x All NBA Defensive 2nd Team

At Center for the Bulls is Artis Gilmore the Hall of Famer who started his career in the ABA where he won the ABA championship in 1975 with the Kentucky Colonels and was the MVP of the ABA playoffs. Gilmore went into the special 1976 ABA dispersal draft, and he was chosen with the first overall pick by the Chicago Bulls. He led the NBA in field goal percentage in four consecutive seasons, including a career best 67% during the 1980-81 season — the fifth highest percentage in NBA history. He remains the NBA's career leader in field goal percentage  with 59.9%.

  • 1x All NBA Defensive 2nd team
  • ABA Rookie of the year
  • ABA All Time team
  • 1x Consensus first-team All American

The 6th Man would be Ben Gordon if he wasn't still playing but it really goes to Steve Kerr. He won five championships three with the Bulls, won the 1997 3pt shooting contest and won the 2006 shooters competition. Hit the game winning shot in game 6 of the 1997 Finals.

The Head Coach would be Phil Jackson who coached all of the six Bulls Championships and has the most wins in Bulls history with 738.

The All-Time Greatest 25 man roster for the Chicago White Sox and Cubs: Part 1

It’s an old age debate that will keep changing over and over through the years. The debate on who fits on the all the time greatest of list or just the all time greatest for one team. In this post you will see the debate on who should be on the ultimate team for the White Sox and Cubs: The starting lineup of 9, the starting rotation, the bullpen, bench and the coaching staff.

The obvious ones are the players who are in the Hall of Fame but players pre 1950 it gets tougher to go all the way back to Cap Anson and the fact the Cubs were the White Stockings. So many good Hall of famers played for the Cubs from the dawn of baseball to the early 1900’s. Also some of the best players for each team might have been inducted wearing another cap or are not in the Hall of Fame yet or nor will never be. The first example that comes to mind is that Shoeless Joe Jackson or Sammy Sosa aren't in the Hall of Fame. While Greg Maddux and Carlton Fisk are wearing blank or a Red Sox cap.

Any ultimate Cubs or White Sox team always will start at shortstop with Mr. Cub himself, RIP Ernie Banks. But since the Cubs have two Hall of Fame shortstops he will be the first basemen while Joe Tinker will be the shortstop. Below are some of Banks statistics.
  • 512 Home runs & 40 5x
  • He was the first person in the National League to win the MVP award back to back seasons in 1958-1959.
  • Most homers by a SS in a season in 1958 with 47 & fewest errors with 12
Tinker won 4 Pennants & Two World Series(1907 & 1908) and is one of the dozen players to steal home twice in a game. Ryno was considered one of the best two-way second basemen ever. The Cubs have two other Hall of Fame second basemen: Billy Herman & Johnny Evers. Evers won an MVP in 1914 while Herman was considered one of the best defensive 2B in his generation where he set the MLB record of 5 straight seasons of handling 900 or more chances. Below are some of Sandberg's stats.
  • Retired with most home runs for 2B(277 of his 282) & fielding % of .989
  • 9x Gold Glove winner, 10x All Star, NL MVP in 1984, 3x led the league in runs scored

It was unfortunate it took the Hall of Fame many years to vote him in Ron Santo, one of the two best 3B of his generation. He played his last season with the White Sox and spent  years in the booth.
  • 342 home runs, 2254 hits, 5x Gold Glove winner, 9x All Star
              C
http://baseballhall.org/hof/Hartnett-GabbyAt catcher the Cubs only have one Hall of Fame catcher, Gaby Harnett. He caught 100 or more game 12x, led the NL in putouts 4x, assists & fielding average 6x. NL MVP 1935 & runner up in 1937. The starting outfield would be: Andre Dawson in RF, Hack Wilson in CF and Billy Williams in LF.

The Hawk is only the 2nd player in history to reach 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases. Below are his Stats:
  • 438 home runs, 1591 RBIS, 2774 Hits
  • NL MVP in 1987(49 HRS, 137 RBIS, .287 AVG, Gold Glove)
  • Won2  of his Gold Gloves 8 with Cubs, 1 of his 4 silver slugger awards & 5 out of his 8 all star appearances.
Wilson set the record of most RBIS in one season with 190 and no player has gotten in 25 RBIS of his record since 1938 also got credited with one later to make it 191. He hit 56 home runs that year and led or tied the NL homerun record 4x and drove in 100 RBIS 6x.

Williams won the NL rookie of the year in 1961 and hit 20 more homers 13 straight years. Won the Sporting News player of the year in 1972 and won a batting title in 1972 with a .333 average.
  • Hit 426 home runs
  • 2711 hits
  • 6x all star
Even though the Cubs are a NL team I had to include Sammy Sosa as the DH. He hit 609 homers, 1667 RBIS, and 2408 hits. He was a 7x all star, 6x silver slugger and 1998 MVP.
